How do I get started with CMMI?

Who are we?

CMMI Institute, an ISACA enterprise, is the global leader in the advancement of best practices in people, process, and technology. CMMI Institute’s promise is to inspire cultures of continuous improvement that elevate performance and create a sustainable competitive advantage. CMMI Institute enables organizations to elevate and benchmark performance across a wide range of critical business capabilities, including product development, service excellence, workforce management, data management, supplier management, and cybersecurity.

For over 25 years, thousands of high-performing organizations in a variety of industries, including aerospace, finance, healthcare, information technology, software, defense, transportation, and telecommunications, have achieved sustainable business success through CMMI adoption and demonstrated their ability as capable business partners and suppliers.

Why Build Capability?

Knowing your organization’s key capabilities create new value.

When an organization’s distinctive capabilities are clearly defined, everything and everyone within the organization begins to positively reinforce each other. The business takes on new life as people know and focus on putting standard processes in place to strengthen their key capabilities.

Organizations that know their capabilities see results through:

  • Increased customer satisfaction

  • Increased probability of capturing new and repeat business

  • Increased profit through improved quality and less re-work

  • Increased productivity

  • Decreased risks

What are our products?

CMMI Institute introduced CMMI Development, Services, and Supplier Management V2.0, which is designed to meet the challenges of the changing global business landscape, CMMI Development V2.0 drives business performance through building and benchmarking key capabilities. The CMMI Services model provides guidance for improving an organization’s capability to provide quality services for customers and end users. CMMI Supplier Management is an integrated set of best practices that improves an organization’s capability to identify and manage suppliers and vendors in a way that maximizes supply chain efficiency and reduces risk.

Three CMMI V1.3 models exist: CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV), CMMI for Services (CMMI-SVC), and CMMI for Acquisition (CMMI-ACQ). There is a fair amount of overlap between the three and about 75% of the material is common across all three models. Most organizations are choosing to move to CMMI Development V2.0.

The People Capability Maturity Model® (PCMM) provides guidance for improving the capability of an organization’s workforce. These best practices help identify skill gaps, break down workflow bottlenecks, and empower team members to develop skills that will help the organization succeed.

Recently, CMMI Institute introduced the first cloud-hosted evidence-based Cybermaturity Platform. Did you know that 87% of C-suite professionals and board members lack confidence in their organization’s cybersecurity initiatives, yet it’s the #1 corporate governance challenge? Cyber threats never stop evolving, so your cybersecurity program shouldn’t either. Only CMMI Cybermaturity Platform, an ISACA Cyber Solution, prioritizes weaknesses in your cybersecurity capabilities with a continually updated, evidence-based approach, so you can efficiently and effectively improve—and wisely invest.

The DMM Program provides the best practices roadmap and services to help organizations build, improve, and measure their enterprise data management function and staff. The program centers around the Data Management Maturity (DMM) model, a comprehensive framework of data management practices in six key categories that help organizations benchmark their capabilities, identify strengths and gaps and leverage their data assets to improve business performance.

How can I use CMMI?

The core of CMMI V2.0 is a proven set of global best practices organized by critical business capabilities which improve business performance. These critical capabilities address the biggest challenges common to any organization, including:

  • Engineering and Developing Products

  • Improving Performance

  • Building and Sustaining Capability

  • Managing Business Resilience

  • Planning and Managing Work

  • Selecting and Managing Suppliers

  • Ensuring Quality

  • Managing the Workforce

  • Supporting Implementation

What is an appraisal?

Thousands of organizations have undergone CMMI appraisals to evaluate and benchmark their operations and identify performance gaps. In a CMMI appraisal, an organization is appraised by a CMMI Institute-Certified Lead Appraiser to identify strengths and weaknesses related to best practices in the CMMI models. A CMMI appraisal demonstrates to customers and business partners the durability of a business's processes. By knowing the appraisal results of prospective suppliers and business partners, buyers can make better decisions about the organization’s capability and performance level when creating business relationships with them.

How can my company begin to get appraised?

CMMI appraisals for companies (sometimes incorrectly referred to as “getting a level” or “getting a company CMMI-certified”) allow your organization to demonstrate the maturity of its organizational capabilities. To learn more about CMMI appraisals, please visit our Introduction to CMMI Appraisals web page, and our FAQ web page (which houses a variety of helpful articles on the subject.)

How do I get trained?

CMMI Institute supports the full lifecycle of capability-building by providing assessments, training, individual certifications, resources, and appraisal services based on our models.

• Training

• Resources

A great first step towards learning more about the CMMI models and appraisals is to attend the Fundamentals of CMMI elearning course (CMMI V1.3) or the Foundations of Capability (CMMI V2.0) instructor-led course.

To schedule an appraisal and/or training service, you should contact a CMMI Institute Partner. CMMI Partners are selected, trained, and licensed by us to deliver official CMMI services. CMMI Partners are the only external source of official CMMI services. Click here to find a CMMI Partner.
